In a context where coastal communities are seeking to redefine their identity through more environmentally friendly practices, Puchuncaví is doing so with concrete initiatives to position itself as the new capital of sustainable tourism in the Valparaíso Region. To leave behind its past linked to industrial pollution, this community has committed to a profound transformation process, where respect for biodiversity and local development take center stage. Thus, Puchuncaví has become a meeting point for those who enjoy outdoor activities, from hiking to extreme sports like paragliding and mountain biking. In this green renaissance, Quirilluca Park stands out as the most recent addition, with 125 hectares of native forests, cliffs, and unique biodiversity. Managed and cared for by the Maratué project, this protected area has become a hub for responsible tourism, integrating activities such as birdwatching and environmental education. “It is very gratifying for us that Quirilluca Park is being considered as part of the sustainable tourism offerings in the area. This reflects the effort and dedication we have put in for years to protect and preserve the Puchuncaví ecosystem, which has not gone unnoticed,” emphasizes Franco Venegas, Socio-Environmental and Territorial Manager of Maratué, adding that this effort is the result of years of commitment to protecting the territory.
THE COMMUNITY AS PROTAGONIST Through tourism, Puchuncaví has generated an estimated economic impact of $200 million annually, boosting local services and fostering jobs related to environmental stewardship. This transformation also has a symbolic component for local authorities, such as councilman Juan Elías Pérez. “Communities, entrepreneurs, and social organizations have been key players in creating a new identity for Puchuncaví. They have contributed their experience, knowledge, and commitment to the land, and have been an integral part of every full-day tour organized in our town, where artisanal breweries, craft workshops, and nurseries are all part of the local economy. Everyone has contributed to the development of a sustainable tourism model that respects the environment and promotes the local economy. Today, more than ever, we are working collaboratively.” In this regard, Fabrizio Valenzuela, head of tourism activities for the municipality of Puchuncaví, emphasizes that sustainable tourism is not only a source of income but also a tool for healing and reinterpretation. “Today, spaces once marked by pain are being transformed into places of hope, learning, and connection,” he affirms. Thus, with a coherent, coordinated approach based on respect for its environment, Puchuncaví is positioning itself as the epicenter of sustainable tourism in Chile, offering an experience that combines conservation, economic development, and environmental awareness.
OTHER INITIATIVES But Puchuncaví is not alone in its pursuit of sustainable tourism. In addition to offerings focused on clean energy, nature immersion, and a comprehensive waste separation program at some accommodations in Olmué, the municipality of Concón has joined the effort. With the support of the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso and various local stakeholders, Concón seeks to promote sustainable tourism that respects the environment and fosters authentic experiences. This initiative is funded by the regional government and aligns with the vision of diversifying the tourism offerings and improving the region’s competitiveness. Under the name “Concón – Mantagua Turistech Program: Technology Transfer for Sustainable Tourism and Authentic Experiences,” approximately 35 establishments in the area will participate in this joint effort, encompassing sectors such as gastronomy, adventure tourism, and hospitality, among others. Rolando Chamy, director of the Curauma Biotechnology Center (NBC) and project leader, emphasized that the first step will be to conduct a comprehensive assessment to identify areas for improvement. In this vein, the acting director of Sernatur, Pamela Venegas, expressed her support for the initiative, indicating that it is crucial to advance in sustainability to ensure that tourist destinations remain attractive and sustainable.
